Tackling Mental Health Concerns in Our Communities
Posted on Oct 16, 2019 by Mary Cordo
Research consistently shows mental health has a huge impact on overall physical health and it is most often up to healthcare institutions to step up for their communities.
Today, nearly 20 percent of American adults struggle with some form of mental illness—and that number is likely to grow. In the last decade, great strides have been made to address mental health concerns in the United States, but there is more to be done. Providing your community with sufficient access to care can go a long way in impacting the community as a whole and help improve your community’s overall health over time.
How can you start to make an impact on your community?
Break down the barriers
You may not know what barriers are stopping those in your community from seeking help, but you need to find out. Once you have identified the barriers, your organization can make an action plan to address them—finances, lack of support, access to care, whatever they may be. The key: make a plan and stick to it.
Build connections
We can all do more when we create synergy with others. Partner with other organizations in your community and set goals and a timeline for what you want to achieve. The local health department, churches and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) are great starting points to build a health coalition addressing mental health concerns. By developing these connections, you are helping your community form bonds and access valuable resources.
The right people in the right positions
Having the right people—those with the knowledge and a passion to see communities address mental illness—in key leadership roles is the best way to make an impact. If your leaders are not invested, you won’t see the changes that can dramatically drive your community to a healthier and brighter future.
